Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR FAQ

Yes and no. Microsoft Dynamics AX2012 was replaced with Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations. Since 2024, Microsoft is rapidly migrating customers who use these old versions (AX2009, AX2012) to Dynamics 365.

The Dynamics 365 platform

Microsoft Dynamics 365 HCM for Finance and Operations (formerly AX2012), is part of the Dynamics 365 platform. A unique proposition comparing to any other HCM solutions. Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations is cloud-based, and fully integrated with Office 365 (Excel, Word) but also with the best BI tool at this moment: Power BI. All benefits of one platform in the cloud come together in Dynamics 365. One single sign-on, secured data based on the authorization of Dynamics 365, one price for all and easy access anywhere, anytime on any device.

Long story short: Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR is a module within Dynamics 365 Finance.

In 2023, Microsoft has merged the infrastructure of the ‘standalone’ Dynamics 365 Human Resources application with the Finance & Operations (F&O) platform. Shortly after, they renamed Finance & Operations to Finance & Supply Chain Management (F&SCM).

Nowadays, it is still possible to run the D365 HR app in an isolated environment, without using the F&SCM features.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR is a powerful human resources (HR) and human capital management (HCM) tool. The platform connects Microsoft’s suite of enterprise apps into a single platform, enabling organizations to link their HR management operations with other key apps such as Dynamics 365 Finance and Dynamics 365 Project Operations.

According to Microsoft’s own words, Dynamics 365 HR is a solution that enables organizations to “create a workplace where people and businesses thrive”. The platform covers a wide range of HR areas such as personnel management, employee development, and learning management and integrates with a variety of third-party tools and solutions according to operational needs.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 for HR professionals

Microsoft Dynamics 365 HR (D365 HR) brings with it a wide range of benefits for HR professionals.

The most compelling of these benefits is the platform’s ability to enable HR teams to optimize their HR programs. D365 HR can, for example, help HR managers to simplify leave and absence processes, create and roll out flexible compensation plans that follow defined guidelines, and connect to existing payroll systems for comprehensive management and tracking.

The platform can even integrate with talent acquisition systems such as LinkedIn Talent Solutions, iCIMS for better end-to-end recruitment management. In addition, other apps can also be embedded to amplify the system capabilities in HR processes as important as Boarding, Document Management or Performance Management.

Another benefit is the high level of detailed insight that D365 HR can help to unlock. With Microsoft Power BI, HR managers can visualize their HR data through centralized, detailed dashboards and use it to inform decision-making. This can be taken a step further through embedded analytics which can be deployed to track and analyze specific HR programs, and data centralization through the Microsoft Dataverse which integrates your HR data with existing systems and partner applications.

Committed to a strong employee experience

Microsoft has demonstrated its commitment to strengthening the employee experience through the continuous release of new features that enhance the functionality of Dynamics 365 HR.
One such feature is the potential for integrating Dynamics 365 HR within Microsoft Teams to streamline HR processes through employee self-service. The integration leverages the full potential of the platform’s leave and absence functionality that FourVision developed in partnership with Microsoft, enabling employees to request leave or time off from within their existing Teams environment.

In addition to self-service, D365 HR helps to transform employee experiences through its centralized employee profiles. Here, employees can share information such as career accomplishments, skills, certifications, and interests to foster positive connections with their colleagues.
